Uttar Pradesh: Medical student sexually harassed by administrative official in AIIMS Gorakhpur

A medical student has alleged that she was “sexually harassed” by an administrative official at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Gorakhpur. The incident took place in December last year when the student was undergoing treatment for depression.

On December 17, 2023, she had overdosed on her medication, after which she was admitted to the psychiatric ward. She got discharged the next day and went to meet the administrative officer. According to her statement, the official allegedly harassed her in his cabin.

The administrative officer has been temporarily suspended until an internal investigation is completed in the case.

According to the institute’s executive director, Gopal Krishna Pal, on January 9, the decision was made to relieve the accused officer of his duties and bar him from entering the AIIMS campus. Additionally, the officer has been restricted from leaving Gorakhpur.

A 9-member inquiry committee has been established to investigate the allegations thoroughly. The Vishakha committee, responsible for addressing sexual harassment cases, is actively working on the matter.
