A bus crash in Mumbai’s Kurla area on Monday night left six people dead and 43 others injured. The victims included a 19-year-old teen and a 55-year-old nurse.
Afrin Shah, who had started her first job earlier that day, was returning home when the accident occurred. She called her father, Abdul Salim, after not finding a rickshaw. Salim advised her to walk to Kurla station. Moments later, he received a phone call urging him to go to the hospital. When he arrived, he found Afrin’s body.
Kannis Ansari, a nurse, was on her way to work for a night shift at a hospital when the bus lost control on SG Barve Marg. She was declared dead at the hospital.
The other victims were identified as Anam Sheikh, Shivam Kashyap, Vijay Gaikwad, and Faruq Chaudhari.
The accident occurred when a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus veered off course, striking pedestrians and vehicles in a crowded area. Families of the victims have demanded justice, arguing that the lack of safety improvements in the area contributed to the tragedy.
Meanwhile, Sanjay More, a bus driver, has been arrested by the police. He faces charges of involuntary manslaughter under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Kurla police station.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. In a statement, Fadnavis announced financial aid of Rs 5 lakh for each victim’s family. He also confirmed that the government would cover the medical expenses for those injured in the accident.
WITNESS RECOUNTS CHAOTIC SCENE
An eyewitness, Zaid Ahmed, 26, said he was leaving his house to go to the railway station when he heard a loud noise. “I ran to the spot and saw a BEST bus had hit pedestrians, other vehicles, including an autorickshaw and three cars. I saw some dead bodies in front of my eyes. We rescued the passengers in the autorickshaw and took them to Bhabha Hospital in another three-wheeler. My friends also helped in providing relief to the injured,” Ahmed was quoted as saying by news agency PTI in its report.
Other witnesses recalled that the bus, which was on route 332 from Kurla to Andheri, also collided with a police vehicle.
