Weather: Light rain likely in North India from Feb 17, snowfall predicted in hills


The western Himalayan region is expected to witness an intense spell of rainfall/ snowfall from February 17-20 and adjoining plains of northwest India from February 19-21 due to an active western disturbance.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), widespread rainfall/ snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms is likely to hit Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh from February 18-20 and Uttarakhand on February 19 and 20.

The weather body further added that scattered to fairly widespread light/moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and hail with gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 gusting to 50 kmph) are likely over Punjab during February 18-20; Haryana-Chandigarh, western Uttar Pradesh during February19-21 and over Rajasthan on February 19.

Meanwhile, the national capital is expected to see a mainly clear sky today with moderate fog in the morning. Minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 9 and 26 degrees Celsius till February 18.

From February 19 to 21, weather activities are likely to change with the possibility of light to very light showers accompanied by thunderstorms in Delhi.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi has shifted from the ‘very poor’ category to the ‘poor’ category, with the reading hovering at 235 on Friday, according to the Safar app.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 ‘severe’.
