Weather udpate: Rainfall, thunderstorm likely in UP, Punjab, Himachal till February 22. Check forecast

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted an intense spell of thunderstorms and hailstorms over the Western Himalayan Region and light to moderate rainfall over the plains of Northwest India in the days to come.

In its bulletin, the IMD predicted moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh till Thursday (February 22). It also predicted moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and hailstorms over Northeast Rajasthan till February 21 (Wednesday).

The weather body also predicted isolated heavy rainfall or snowfall over Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday. Similarly, it predicted heavy rainfall or snowfall over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Thursday.

“Fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall/snowfall with thunderstorms, lightning & gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph gusting to 60 kmph) very likely over Northeast India during 20th to 23rd and isolated to scattered light/moderate rainfall/snowfall during 24th- 26th February, 2024,” the IMD said.

The weather body also predicted isolated heavy rainfall over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Isolated to scattered light/moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning likely over Bihar and with gusty winds (speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph) West Bengal & Sikkim on 21st & 22nd and over Jharkhand on 21st February,” it said in the bulletin.

Lightning and stormy winds may occur in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and parts of the Northeast on Wednesday, while regions including Himachal Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Arunachal Pradesh might witness lightning, it said.

The weather body said that areas including Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, parts of Northeast, and Assam are likely to experience heavy rainfall or snowfall on February 24 (Saturday).

Meanwhile, Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) received light rain on Tuesday morning, with the minimum temperature dropping to 12 degrees Celsius. Even the parts of Lahaul and Spiti, Kinnaur and higher reaches of Kullu and Chamba districts in Himachal Pradesh received moderate to heavy snowfall on Tuesday.
