Bengal BJP chief writes to Amit Shah, demands action to restore law in Sandeshkali in North 24 Parganas

West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar wrote to Home Minister Amit Shah citing “urgent attention to lawlessness in Sandeshkhali” in North 24 Parganas district, after locals burnt down TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh’s poultry farm on Friday.

“The recent accounts of heinous attacks on the local tribal communities by individuals, such as Shahjahan Sheikh, Shibu Hazra, Uttam Sardar, and other TMC goons, demand urgent action from the government to restore law and order in the area,” Majumdar said.

He claimed that Sheikh “had been terrorising the residents of Sandeshkhali with impunity”.

“His reign of terror has instilled fear and chaos among the people, leading to a complete breakdown of peace and order. Despite repeated pleas for assistance, the local police have failed to provide adequate protection and support to the affected communities, exacerbating the situation further,” he said.

Majumdar stated that the “safety and well-being of the citizens” must be “prioritised” and action should be taken against those “responsible for perpetuating violence and terror in the region”.

“I trust in your commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the rights of every citizen of our country. Your prompt attention to this matter is crucial in restoring peace and order in West Bengal,” he said in his letter to Shah.

Last month, members of the Enforcement Directorate team (ED) were injured after their team was attacked by a mob in Sandeshkhali, while they were en route to raid Sheikh’s house in connection with an alleged ration distribution scam.

The TMC leader has been absconding since the ED issued him a summons in the alleged ration distribution scam.
