Haldwani violence: Authorities were warned about possible stir 1 week before, sources say

The intelligence department had alerted the administration about possible protests in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani one week before the protests broke out, sources said.

According to the sources, the intelligence report stated that fundamentalist Muslim organisations could protest heavily against the demolition of an illegally-built madrassa and the mosque in Haldwani’s Banbhoolpura. The report also stated that women and children may also participate in the protests, sources said.

Earlier on Saturday, the police confirmed the arrest of five people in connection with the violence.

Five people were killed and over 100 police personnel were injured in the violence that broke out over the demolition of an illegally built madrassa and adjoining mosque in Banbhoolpura.
