Sandeshkhali: TMC leader Ajit Maity removed from post after women seek his arrest

Fresh protests erupted in Bermajur area of Sandeshkhali in West Bengal on Sunday with women taking to the streets to demand the immediate arrest of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Ajit Maity.

Protesters, largely women, have alleged that Maity, a close associate of Shahjahan Sheikh, was also involved in land grabbing and extortion.

Amid the demand of his arrest by locals, the Trinamool Congress removed Ajit Maity from his post. He was TMC Anchal President.

Earlier in the day, a Trinamool Congress delegation visited the trouble-torn Sandeshkhali for the second consecutive day and heard the grievances of villagers who have been protesting against the alleged atrocities by local leaders of the ruling party.

The delegation, including state ministers Partha Bhowmick and Sujit Bose, visited the troubled Bermajur area, where recent violent protests have taken place. They engaged with the local community, requesting a period of one-and-a-half months to comprehensively address their concerns and grievances.

“Give us one-and-half month. We have promised that all the land grab incidents, which had been reported, will be verified. We cannot solve all the problems in one go. To address the issues, there are official procedures that need time to be completed,” Bhowmik, the state irrigation minister, said.
