Uttar Pradesh: BJP names Dara Singh Chauhan as candidate for Legislative Council bypolls for seat left vacant by Dinesh Sharma

The BJP named Dara Singh Chauhan as its candidate for the by-poll for a seat in Uttar Pradesh’s legislative council, months after he lost an Assembly by-election.

Chauhan was named as the candidate for the seat, which was left vacant after former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma was appointed a Rajya Sabha MP.

There is also a possibility of Dara Singh Chauhan being made a minister in the cabinet expansion in Uttar Pradesh.

Chauhan, a party-hopper, was elected as an MLA from Ghosi as a Samajwadi Party candidate in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, but quit to join the BJP last year. However, he failed to win the seat as a BJP candidate and his Samajwadi Party rival prevailed. Chauhan was in the BJP before joining the Samajwadi Party.

The BJP’s decision to field him for the MLC seat, which he is all but certain to win, underlines the party’s efforts to keep its broad social coalition intact in the politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
