Ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, it is now almost clear that the players’ performance in the first half of the IPL will be crucial. The Indian cricket team is currently engaged with Afghanistan in a T20I series. The return of two veterans – Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli – has made things more interesting. After the 2022 T20 World Cup, where India lost in the semi-final, there general notion was that India would bank on youth going forward in T20Is. However, things are different now. There are speculations on the captaincy too. While Hardik Pandya was the favourite earlier, now Rohit Sharma is clearly in the fray.

In the midst of this, Yuvraj Singh, in a press conference, was told that there have been talks since Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were recalled for the T20I series against Afghanistan. “Kis tarike ki baatein chal rahi hai (What type of talks are going on)?” Yuvraj Singh replied.

The reporter told that there were talks that because Rohit And Kohli are back, the. youngsters will not get a chance. Yuvraj Singh smiled and started singing: “Kuch toh log kehnge, logo ka kaam hai kehna (People will say a lot of things, it’s their job). They are here after more than a year because they play all three formats. When one plays three formats, they get tired. They have to manage their bodies. They have to manage their cricket.”

Then the reporter asked if India will win the T20 World Cup or not. “Yeh aap bhagwaan se puchiye. Wahi bata payenge (This you have to ask God. Only he can tell you),” a cheeky Yuvraj replied.

In a recent interaction, another former India player Deep Dasgupta said that he though the team has moved on in the T20 format and pointed out that the main criticism against the veteran batters was their ‘lack of intent’.

“I thought that the team has moved on in the T20I format. I am a little surprised. But the way that Rohit Sharma has played in the 50 over World Cup was great. The main criticism with the senior India players was the lack of intent in the T20 format,” Dasgupta told Star Sports.

However, the former cricketer was quick to point out that the pitches in West Indies may end up helping spinners during the T20 World Cup 2024. In that situation, the experience of a batter like Kohli can be crucial in negotiating the sluggish conditions.

“Obviously we saw that with Rohit and with Virat we have to keep in mind what will be the pitches that we might get in West Indies. Are we expecting 180-200 pitches or something around 160s,” he added.
